Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 12

Welcome back, it’s day 12 of my Christmas vacation trip and it’s New Year’s Eve. Today also happened to be my dog Niko’s 8th birthday and we had up a small banner to celebrate. I had played Nintendo Switch sports with Cody and Maci a few points during the day along with having an outdoor lunch with some pizza made on their pizza grill. I didn’t stay out much because I was afraid of the bugs outside (I know, I’m a wuss!). Anyway I didn’t get around to playing that redesigned level in Super Mario Maker 2 with Maci as planned but I’m going whet around to it tomorrow, winch will also be our last day visiting Cody and Maci and possibly our last visit to Del Rio as Cody may end up being transferred off Laughlin Air Force base sometime in February. Where he’ll end up is undetermined, but it probably won’t Texas. We will still be here most of the day but we leave for our flight to Dallas tomorrow around 4pm so I’ll still have time to play with Maci. Anyway that’s about it for today, thank you for reading and I’ll see you tomorrow.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 11

Welcome back, it’s day 11 of my Christmas vacation trip and quite a few things happened today. First of all I got to have something I haven’t had in a long time, a burger from Whataburger. Now some of you that know me know that I mentioned Whataburger a few times before in the past, and now you get to learn a little more about it as it really is kind of a Texas fast food icon really. The story of the chain is actually routed in Texas. In 1950, during the Texas oil boom, A young businessman named Harmon Dobson partnered with fellow entrepreneur Paul Burton to open a small burger stand in Corpus Christi, Texas realizing the need to feed the population. Dobson’s goal was simple, make a burger that took two hands to hold and tasted so good that when you took a bite you would say 'What a burger! Which as you can imagine also happens to be how the chain got its name.

Founder Harmon Dobson in 1950

The burger was a massive quarter pound of 100% beef on a 5-inch bun with lettuce, three slices of tomato, four dill pickles, chopped onions, ketchup, and mustard, all fresh and cooked exactly the way the customer wanted it. They wouldn’t put the patty on the grill until the customer ordered. The first Whataburger opened on 2609 Ayers Street, across from Del Mar College on August 8th 1950. They sold their burgers for 25 cents with drinks and chips as side items, the chain later expaned to include fries and shakes and it’s been a Lone Star favorite ever since.

The first Whataburger stand (1950)

Today Whataburger has expanded to more than 670 locations in Texas alone, and it’s menu includes everything from chicken strips to fajitas to breakfast items. The first thing that you notice when you pull up to a Whataburger is it’s unique architecture, from 1961 to 2020, each restaurant has a A-frame Structure with an orange and white color scheme. Apparently the idea came from Dobson’s love for flying airplanes. He realized the importance of eye-catching architecture and signage as well as liking the idea of being able to see his stores from the air, and the orange and white color scheme was picked since orange and white are traditionally the colors used on many airport structures. The Whataburger location in Del Rio is one of the older locations with the A-frame in tact.

The Whataburger in Del Rio

Another thing about Whataburger that’s unique is actually ordering your food. When you place an order you are given a small place tent with your order number on it, and when they call out that number you go up to the counter to receive your order in my case, my number was 88.

My Whataburger number tent and my medium Coke

The number tents have also become iconic as some fans go out of their way to steal and collect them. They’ve even been used by police officers as makeshift evidence markers. Now that’s funny!

A crime scene with Whataburger number tents

For my order, I simply got a burger with medium fries and medium drink (A Coke as previously mentioned). I was going to go with a triple actually but changed it. Unfortunately my order ended up with the classic fast food curse of a wrong order as I asked for ketchup and mustard only, and ended up getting the works. As the order was listed correctly on the receipt, we assume the cashier just hit the wrong button when placing the order. I was ok with it though, as we just took it off.

My Whataburger meal

Me and my brother took my meal to meet with the rest of my family at a bar called Mesquite Creek in the old part of town. I actually remember the place as it used to be an old school soda fountain called the emporium, where you could get ice cream and milk shakes and things. Apparently they didn’t do well financially and the bar took its place. We order some beers, two orders of pretzels bites with cheese, and a cracker cheese and sausage platter. I then went along with Cody to AutoZone and also did a drive by of my old neighborhood where I got to my old elementary school (of which I stayed for a very brief period of time) my old middle school, my old high school buildings and my old house, which I’m happy to say hasn’t changed at all since I left.

My old school buildings and house still the way it was

After that, we went to Walmart to get some beer and Wii sports for the Switch before going home. Cody’s friend Chad came over for dinner where we ate fried turkey, rolls, mashed potatoes, and bacon Mac and cheese. After dinner me, Cody, Chad, Maci and Nana played a quick, no score round of Uno Attack which lasted 3 rounds. The day ended with me and Maci finally playing the Switch together playing my Super Mario Maker 2 levels which didn’t go as well as I hoped because instead of getting 4 players as a imagined I only ended up with 2 and it ended with a level that we were unable to beat. I did end up tweaking the level afterwards, so hopefully we can try again tomorrow. Anyway that’s all the major events that happened today a lot compared to previous days on this trip, but that about it for today, thank you for reading and I’ll see you tomorrow.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 10

Welcome back, it’s day 10 of my Christmas vacation trip and unfortunately  things did not go as planned in the gaming area as Maci was busy with taking down the Christmas tree and other things but she did promise to move it to tomorrow if she couldn’t find time today, which I happily took up on as I knew she would be busy today anyway. I did at least play the card game Phase 10 today, I rage quited after getting stuck on a phase 3 or 4 times, but still played it. Anyway that about wraps up my blog today and I’ll see you tomorrow.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 9

Welcome back, it’s day 9 of my Christmas vacation trip and as Ive previously mentioned we all going bowling tosay where I think I may have got probably the lowest score in a bowling game ever at least as far as I can remember. I did ask Maci about playing switch games tomorrow and she did say yes so that will be fun. but anyway that about wraps up my blog today and I’ll see you tomorrow.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 8

Welcome back, it’s day 8 of my Christmas vacation trip and once again not many eventful things happened, the main highlights of the day were playing uno attack and watching a comedy special on Netflix. however I wasn’t able to do the gaming special like I previously mentioned  as Maci  has a work schedule unlike me and we won’t be able to do it the whole day because we’re all going bowling tomorrow. I will at least try to ask tomorrow but I might just call it off but anyway that about wraps up my blog today and I’ll see you tomorrow.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 7

Welcome back, it’s day 6 of my Christmas vacation trip and once again not many eventful things happened, my me and my mom were by ourselves most of the day as the rest went to a casino and we really didn’t do much. I was at least able to shave as I stupidly forgot to bring my razor with me on the trip and we had to use the razors here, but it did at least get the job done. Tomorrow however I am planning on a gaming special like I previously mentioned  as both Maci and I are Switch owners and I do have one 4 player game so that will be interesting anyway that about wraps up my blog today and I’ll see you tomorrow.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 6

Welcome back, it’s day 6 of my Christmas vacation trip and is Christmas Day. notable events include watching my brother opening his and the dogs presents (of which some were destroyed), an encounter with Cody’s buddy’s cat mojo, and me having a candy sweet potato mashed potato with a marshmallow topping that I reluctantly tried. I do have video footage of the present opening which (along with other videos) I’ll upload once I get better internet. I also plan to sometime play my Switch games with the family, not sure when but probably not tomorrow as Cody, Maci and my Nana and Poppy are going to a casino. So I’ll have to wait till the following day but until then I’ll see you tomorrow and I wish everyone Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Bonus video

Here's some video i recorded of the dogs receiving their Christmas presents

Whos who

Maci Devan

Cody's wife and my Sister in law. They met when Cody was still in college in Denton, and had been together ever since. Interestingly, Maci and I do have a lot in common. We both love Goldfish  crackers, Mario, and get joked on by Cody.

Cody Devan

My brother 4 years older than me. While he was born in New York like I am, you would never know that from meeting him. living in Texas for more 10 years, changed him from a New Yorker to a Texan, swapping his snow boots for cowboy boots and sometimes swapping from speaking English to Spanish.

Niko Devan

My brothers first dog now almost 8 years old. He's an Australian Blue Heeler and was quite the barker when we lived in Texas. The reason he has a Russian name despite being an Australian breed is actually because of me. When Cody first brought him home as a puppy, we both we in his room to name him and I suggested Niko after, believe it or not, Niko Belic from GTA 4, since I was fascinated with the series.

Charlie Devan

My brothers second dog and is also quite the barker. He's an Australian Sheppard and is quite the fluffy dog.

Walter Devan

My brothers newest dog of the bunch. He's an Australian Blue Heeler, Just like Niko, and is kind of a terror. He often steals the other dogs toys and roughs around with the other dogs.

Sally Devan

My Mother who you've briefly seen in the moving video. Shes also quite the dog lover, so you can image how happy she was to be around Niko, Charlie, and Walter!

Jannette Gee

My Nana who you've also briefly seen in the moving video. She's what you expect from grandparent, a friendly retired hospital employee now spending time with family.

James Gee

My Poppy who you've also briefly seen in the moving video. He's also what you expect from grandparent, a former bottler for Coke, now retired and spending time with family.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 5

Welcome back, it’s day 5 of my Christmas vacation trip and some notable things that happened today include an embarrassing overreaction on my part, a change in Christmas Eve dinner plans from the Chinese buffet to the Blue Oasis Sports Bar, and playing a board Game called Ticket To Ride. Right now it’s pretty late so I’m going to keep this short so I’m going to get some sleep and I’ll see you tomorrow.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 4

Welcome back, it’s day 4 of my Christmas vacation trip and once again we didn’t do much today other than watch some tv and play a rummy based card game which I got sick of after a few rounds. But some notable things I’ve encountered today are Julio’s tortia chips, a local brand of tortia chips that I’ve not had since moving, and I’ve learned that my brother Cody and his fiancĂ© Maci ARE married now. Turns out that due to a misunderstanding in a text from my mother on the 30 of January, I though that they got engaged on the 30th and would be married later, but in actuality they engaged on the 22nd and married on the 30th. So yeah, that’s something. I do have at least some things and hopefully some video tomorrow as I’m going to be going for some more local food which I’m really excited about and I’ll get back to you tomorrow on that so stay tuned!

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 3

Welcome back, it’s day 3 of the trip. It’s our trip to the to Texas, the trip was Plattsburgh to Philadelphia, Philadelphia to Dallas, and then Dallas to Del Rio. It was a journey with some crazy moments from a meal before boarding coming late, to rushing through the airport to catch up to a boarding plane only to be rescheduled, to simply dealing with an annoying person on the plane. Now we’re staying in my brothers house on an air force base. We’ve done some meal planning for the week but other than that, not much else is set in stone.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 2

Welcome back, it’s day 2 of my Christmas vacation trip and already things got off to a rocky start. Now the goal for the beginning our trip was to drive to spend the night at my nana and poppy’s house then drive to the airport. But the thing is, it’s a two hour drive, and due to my Mom being late and showing up at 5:20 pm, let’s just say she wasn’t in the happiest of moods.

Ryan Devan’s Christmas Vaccination: Part 1

Hello everyone, it’s blogging time once again, and this month I’m doing something a little bit different. For Christmas vacation, my family decided to take a trip to Texas to spend the holidays. On this trip it will be me, my mom, my brother, and his fiancĂ©, spending a good portion together. Since I’m going on the trip, I thought I would document the whole trip from the time I pack to the end, not only in blog, but in vlog as well. I’ll let myself explain the rest in video, take it away me!
